Sheesh, I would not want to drive in Chiang Mai if not for lane sharing. It’s amazing to watch as all the motos rise to the head of the traffic queues sort of like bubbles in a glass of beer. And I’m right there with them. I go to the head of every line every time.
I’ve had cab drivers pull their vehicles out of the way more than once when passage between their car and another was too narrow for me to pass. Imagine that happening in the states!
The biggest problem I can see is that stateside you have a lot of drivers who already resent motorcyclists because of the freedom they enjoy in negotiating traffic. Changing that attitude is going to be a big job.
I am not sure what to think of lane splitting as a whole, I see the value in it. My only concern is the driver who isn’t aware of the practicality of it and the reasoning behind it. I have had this discussion here with friends because it is illegal in BC, but there has been talk of it. I am not sure our driving public could figure it out and I would hate to be taken out because of someone getting ticked with me or like usual not being cognizant that there is a motorcycle on the road beside them. It is amazing how many people here don’t even shoulder check or look in their blind spots.
I think you have to be a pretty skilled and artful rider to pull it off and I am too much of a newb to even thing of attempting something like this. Would you do it?
