June – Lost Coast & Hwy 36 Adventure

Mattole Road, a poorly marked off-shoot a block from Ferndale’s Main St., is the gateway to the Lost Coast. The road winds up, over bumpy ill-maintained asphalt, through gentle hills dotted with cows toward the ocean. We rode through the underbelly of low clouds before emerging in sight of the Pacific.

Brightly colored clusters of spring flowers dotted the landscape

Coasting to the ocean road Mattole Road runs along the Pacific for a mere five miles before returning to the Humboldt County hills. In sight of “Steamboat Rock” we stopped to take in the smells and sights of the nearby sea.

A single lane over a bridge-under-repair is no cause for waiting with the traffic near zero this Sunday afternoon
