June – Lost Coast & Hwy 36 Adventure

Approaching Petrolia, the colors multiply

Petrolia is one of those out-of-the-way places that raises the inevitable question: What do people do out here?

Leaving Petrolia via an archway of spring foliage

The beautiful purple trumpets of an unidentified wildflower accompanied us at the margins of Mattole Rd. through the Lost Coast region

At Honeydew, another forgotten place between Hwy 101 and the coast, we jog east over a one lane wooden bridge and immediately up the first of more than two dozen switchbacks to the summit of Grasshopper Mountain. Mattole Rd. took us into the western end of the Humboldt Redwoods State Park, a delightful surprise to reward our tenacious crossing of the many tight turns that made for a slow crossing on Donna’s V-Star.

While the road surface through the park was absolutely the worst we encountered all weekend, the cathedral experience in the Redwoods is well worth the jolting bumpy ride

The road through the park ends at one of the intersections of Hwy 101 and the Avenue of the Giants. At this point we desperately needed fuel, so the day’s photography would finish as we located gas then rode up the Avenue of the Giants back toward Fortuna.
