Day 4—July 4
I took this day to laze around the homestead of my friend Gurdon and listen to six 20 something boys, being boys with some of the loudest fire works I have heard in ages. Combine fire, noise, and some alcoholic beverage and you get some crazed youth in nirvana. I figured we were safe with two of them being EMT’s and two working for BLM. No unwanted fires or injuries occurred. But as the sun set at 11:30 pm….things got crazy!
Three of the boys are Navajo Indian and were totally into catching and smoking fish. The product of their labor was incredible. I haven’t eaten such good fish in ages. I made pork carnitas and one of the boys made Indian fry bread, so we feasted as the sun set. Then the real firework display showed sterling regalia. The sky was lit by fireworks all alone the lake. This is when I discovered my camera had died and was quite dead. I had thought my batteries were gone so put some in the charger the evening I arrived, but nooooooooo. So, no photos of the amazing firework display, the wonderful family that hosted me, nor the beautiful lake. Grrrrrr.
Day 5—July 5
I headed to Glacier with a stop at Walmart to buy a point and shoot. There was NO WAY I could consider traveling on without a camera. It was unholy!
I bought another Kodak to try. The price was right, but it was only a 7mega pixel camera with a 3x zoom. I wasn’t thrilled but gave it a shot. The results were passable, but after a day of shooting, I decided I wanted more zoom.
The south entrance to Glacier NP

July 5th being a Saturday, was NOT the optimal time to visit, especially since the road had only opened on July 3 and was a muddy crowded mess. Nevertheless, the scenery could not be beat!!
