The BMW F800 ST is on my list of must ride asap. I have longed looked at this gorgeous machine and have spoken to friends that own them and espouse their golden traits, but I have yet to drink the kool-aid, but look forward to the opportunity.
Sitting on my friend Ken’s I first discovered to my joy that I could actually touch the ground with both feet, equally. This in of itself is huge being most of the Beemer models without alteration or lowered seats, don’t seem to fit quite right. I, with a 30 inch inseam, am still too small for these machines!! I have thought about those platform boots, then chuckle and think better of it.
The F800ST fits in their touring category and is classified as their “entry level tourer”. The term “entry”, may allow one to think that BMW has held back on some of the famous Beemer features. But all they really did was bring it down to a manageable size without skimping on any of their usual renowned characteristics! Seeing my friend Ken’s F800 ST parked next to his R1200 RT, the 800 looks like a baby of the RT. You see the sleek line, but at 1/3 the size. The weight of the RT is 504lb dry and the ST a nimble 100 lbs less, weighing in at 412lb ready to roll. The F800 has power to spare with its 85HP engine output and will keep you smiling whether riding around corners and curves, navigating traffic, or hustling along Alpine roads. The 4.22 gallon gas tank seems a bit skimpy for a tourer, but the light flickable nature of the bike keeps one traveling easily between gas stations.
Now mind you, my experience thus far is all hearsay. Now I need to get out there and ride one for myself and then post a new “personal” review!!
