1978 Kawasaki KZ 650SR–One awesome motorcycle…but what to do?

I have this beautiful old bike that now lives in our garage. Gary bought it three years ago and used it for commuting from Reno to Sacramento after his FZ1 was stolen. The ol’ boy ran like a top but was always difficult to start. Now it won’t start so lives in our garage. The body is in perfect condition, and I know underneath whatever ails it is a dynamic old machine. I have threatened to make into a cafe racer, although it’s so darned cute the way it is, I best just leave it original. It has the framework for a Vetter fairing, but the fairing is missing (thankfully). I say thankfully because I think the fairing is ugly, but then it’s original contribution to the overall design of the Kawasaki was to help with fuel consumption. I wonder if it did?

Here’s the original fairing for that year Kawa, but it was not sold with the bike. This one is off the Vetter site, to show what it looked like.

I have to think that one of my more inclined mechanical moto-buddies could help me get this baby started and running again? If so, then I need to make the decision of whether to sell or keep. After all, it’s a mighty fine example of a 1978 UJM.

The original book that was on the bike when we bought it!
